South Carolina beach resorts
The coastline of South Carolina boasts a wonderful variety of destinations, offering a myriad of activities, attractions and, of course, many ways to relax. At the North end, Myrtle Beach boasts a wide range of beachfront accommodations, many family attractions and more ways to shop than you can imagine! There are two major shopping, dining and entertainment centres. Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing. Although known as the ‘golf capital of the world’, of the 14 million visitors, only 1 million are golfers. Myrtle Beach is primarily a summer family resort so pack the costume, sun lotion and flip flops and head to ‘The Grand Strand’.
Just 30 minutes south of Myrtle Beach is the hidden gem, Pawleys Island. The oldest seaside resort in America, the island itself still has evidence of the summer homes of rich plantation owners from Charleston. Now, Pawleys Island offers pristine, uncrowded beaches, waterways teeming with wildlife, quaint shopping malls, fine dining and more. Area attractions include Brookgreen Gardens, Huntington Beach State Park and Hobcaw Barony. We love it so much we bought a home here in 2003! It is also home to some of the highest ranked golf courses in South Carolina, if not America.
Head 90 minutes south of Pawleys Island and you come to Historic Charleston. One of the most popular American destinations, Charleston has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
Charleston has become the most visited city in the US so rooms fill up fast. Early booking is recommended. Downtown Charleston boasts a bewildering collage of shops, dining, historic homes and attractions. You can view the City on foot, or choose a horse and carriage ride.
Beyond the City limits are many other attractions including the historic homes and gardens along Ashley River Road. Also, Fort Sumter, where the opening shots of the US Civil War took place and Patriot’s Point Naval Museum. Accommodation ranges from the island resorts of Wild Dunes and Kiawah, to elegant Downtown Hotels.
hilton head island
The unique island of Hilton Head sits at the southern tip of the Carolina coast. Sea Pines Resort, sits at the southern tip of the island, and offers a range of villas, condos and private homes as well as the elegant Inn at Harbour Town. Harbour Town Golf Links is one of three on-site courses but golf is just one pastime on offer. The resort is a maze of cycle trails. There is also the beach, tennis, water sports and a range of shopping and dining, including at Harbour Town Marina.
There are also beach resorts including the Westin Resort & Spa at Port Royal Plantation and The OMNI Oceanfront Resort which is located in Palmetto Dunes Resort. Public beach access at Coligny Beach.
